Many thanks to everyone who made it down for the launch of Nick Bollinger's "100 Essential New Zealand Albums" book on Friday night - a fine time was had by all, books were sold, opinions debated heatedly... and nobody got hurt.

For those of you who missed out, we still have copies of the book, along with Nick's earlier effort, "How To Listen To Pop Music", both still at a special Slow Boat price.

Friday was further enlivened by a visit from none other than former Smiths guitarist, Johnny Marr, visiting in his new capacity as guitarist for young Wakefield indie rockers The Cribs. Once we got over the heart palpitations, we managed a bit of a chinwag, got some stuff signed, took some pictures, and Johnny revealed himself to be something of a connoisseur of NZ indie rock, grabbing recent releases from Connan Mockasin, Lawrence Arabia, The Phoenix Foundation and The Chills.

An absolutely stellar fella, and one who is more than welcome round these parts any time at all - meeting your heroes should always be this great!

Slow Boat Records is proud to host the book launch for Nick Bollinger's "100 Essential New Zealand Albums" here in the store, this Friday the 26th Feb from 6pm til 7.30pm.

Come on down and grab a copy of this fine tome in praise of the finest in NZ music; get Mr Bollinger, one of the country's finest music critics, to sign it for you; and argue the toss with him over some of his inclusions and exclusions...

Thanks also to everyone who made it down to our Phoenix Foundation "Merry Kriskmass" instore here last week - a terrific time was had by all, extra special thanks to the band and their management for sharing the love via their favourite local record shop. The EP is still fair flying out the door, and makes a lovely, thoughtful, good fun little Xmas pressie for someone special!

And we have literally TONNES of awesome stuff for you to give and receive this Xmas - from badges and posters at only a few bucks, right up to special box sets (we even still have "The Beatles In Mono", and stereo!) for someone you really, really love! But crucially we have an absolute shedload of delicious vinyl, new and second hand, for the true music lover in your life - from classic reissues from the likes of Bob Dylan, The Band, Big Star, Television and The Rolling Stones through to some of this year's crucial indie releases from the likes of Bill Callahan, Death Cab For Cutie, The XX and The Horrors. Pick of the bunch, though, is still probably the glorious, and very limited 2LP "AK79" reissue, which we have secured the last remaining copies of.

Sprinkling a little festive cheer, Slow Boat is thrilled to announce that we will have our favorite local band, The Phoenix Foundation playing live instore this Friday the 11^th December at 6pm, by way of celebrating their latest release, “The Merry Kriskmass EP”, which we will have available at a special Slow Boat price, and which the guys may even stick around and sign for you, at a push.

It also marks five years since the band, bright eyed and bushy tailed, played here in support of the release of their debut album “Horsepower”.

They have recently had some terrific press in the UK, where their last album “Happy Ending” has just been released, including a 5 star review from Andy Gill in The Independent, as well as similarly gushing, effusive praise in hallowed rock snob bibles Mojo and Q.

Space is limited, so I would suggest getting here early…

A Decade Of New Zealand

We now have tickets for next Thursday's Lawrence Arabia "A Decade Of New Zealand" tour available, cash only and a measly $16, including booking fee...

The Silver Scroll winner will be performing material from his self titled debut as well as his latest release, "Chant Darling" before heading back overseas to tour in support of the UK release of the album on the fine Bella Union label, so this will be your last chance to see him for a while.

Also instore now, and selling like the proverbial hot cakes, is the brand spankin' new 6 track EP from The Phoenix Foundation, entitled 'The Merry Kriskmas EP'. Showcasing the whimsical, lighthearted side of the band, it is the first taster of a new album due early next year, and would make a lovely Kriskmas (sorry) present for someone you think has been good...

Afraid there is a bit of a wait on the second run of copies of the Chris Knox tribute/ benefit album 'Stroke' - we hope to have copies by the end of next week. We'll let you know.

Also of particular interest is the new album from the Dave Rawlings Machine 'A Friend Of A Friend' - better known as Mr Gillian Welch, Rawlings is an extraordinary guitarist, and the album (on which Ms Welch is featured) is a blast from start to finish.

And how's this for a closer - on top of all the other swell gigs we have tickets for over the next few months (Camera Obscura, Neko Case, Yo La Tengo), we have just received tickets for a rare band show from none other than the extraordinary Joanna Newsom, playing at the Paramount on the 31st January, which will be marvellous.

Howdy, all!

Lots of new things for your consideration instore now, not least of which is the Chris Knox tribute/ benfit album "Stroke". Featuring a stellar line-up local and international talent, including The Chills, The Verlaines, The Mint Chicks, Shayne Carter, Will Oldham, Stephin Merritt, and so many more, at only $25 for a double CD it's a great way to help fund Knoxy's rehabilitation, and to bag yourself a great selection of worthy tributes to his music in one fell swoop.

Also fresh out on the shelves is the latest from local D'n'B behemoths Shapeshifter, called "The System Is A Vampire", along with sterling new efforts from 'none more indie' Auckland girl duo The Gladeyes (the wonderfully titled "Psychosis Of Love"), Yo La Tengo's surprisingly funky "Popular Songs" and Bob Dylan's (ahem!) Christmas album "Christmas In The Heart"...

Yowsa! Which brings us round to the fact that, yet again, Santa and the Elves are poised and ready - all you need do is load up their sleighs...

Okay, some really great news - tickets have today gone on sale for Neko Case at the San Fran Bathhouse on the 2oth of January!!! I wouldn't stall too long on these - this is a cert to sell out...

And we have just received a huge shipment of quality new vinyl which we are drip-feeding out onto the racks - lots of old faves from the Velvet Underground, Kraftwerk, Marvin Gaye, Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, The Cure et al, but also lots of new stuff that we haven't had before, including titles from Nina Simone, The Electric Prunes, Motley Crue, Black Sabbath, JD Blackfoot and many, many more. A real grab bag of delights - swing by soon whilst there's still lots left on the buffet table...

Howdy, all!

Just a quick scribble to let you all know of the great new stuff we have in as of, like, now!

Like the self-titled album from the self-styled indie-folk Traveling Wilburys Monsters Of Folk - namely, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes, M Ward and Jim James of My Morning Jacket; the eponymous debut from young London quartet The XX (think Yo La Tengo jamming some Young Marble Giants tunes) - thoroughly excellent; the Volcano Choir album, featuring Bon Iver's Justin Vernon collaborating with Collections Of Colonies Of Bees - very abstract but kinda beguiling; Volume 2 of the Bob Dylan's fascinating "Theme Time Radio Hour"; or how about some lovely, lovely vinyl of the new Clean album "Mister Pop", or the Stone Roses classic debut, or hefty 180gm reissues of Wilco's "AM", "Summerteeth" and my personal fave, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" - which all come with a CD of the album as well.

And we have just done another vinyl order, which should be in in a week or so - watch this space!

Almost unbelievably, Slow Boat now has a Twitter profile - we figure if it's good enough for Jay-Z, Obama, Paris Hilton and all those other chummies, it's clearly good enough for us...

Search for us under the user name SlowBoatRecords - the plan is to use it to provide notice of anything significant happening during the day - arrival of imports, significant new releases, instore events etc.

But we'll just see how it goes, eh?

Just letting you all know that we have just had a large, glorious vinyl deluge - loads of new and reissue titles - all The Smiths studio albums, The Eels "Hombre Loco", more copies of Wilco's newie "Wilco (The Album)" (after the first lot flew out the door in record time!), lots of great catalogue stuff from 'Boat faves Calexico, Iron & Wine, M. Ward and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and so many, many more.

And I think to myself - what a wonderful world...!!!

Howdy, all!

Just a quick note to let you know we are presently packing some seriously tasty reissue LP vinyl - quite apart from terrific new titles from local surf-organ trio The Mantarays, Placebo's newie "Battle For The Sun", or the latest cracker from Wilco (currently out of stock, but on its' way as we speak), we have fabola reissues of iconic titles like Public Image Limited's "Second Edition" (aka the 2LP version of "Metal Box"), the three LP's from influential US indie trio Galaxie 500, plus fine titles from PJ Harvey, The Smiths, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tom Waits, as well as a smattering of tasty jazz.

Just the thing to stave off those mid-Winter blues.

*In a spectacular coup for us here at Slow Boat, your local independent record store, we are thrilled to announce that we are now able to provide a service that seems much in demand – transferring vinyl to CD, courtesy of our newly acquired TEAC LP to CD Recorder!!!

Our “man on the inside” at RIANZ reliably informs us that we are able to provide this service on the following conditions:

1- That you own the recording you want copied, and…
2- That the copy you make is for your own personal use. The law entitles you to make a copy of any recording you possess for your own personal use, and this effectively qualifies as ‘format shifting’.

This is a great opportunity to get vinyl that is not available on CD transferred so you can continue to enjoy it in the digital age! The charge for a single LP transferred to CD is $20

Furthermore, we have obtained extra copies of the very limited edition “Singles Box Set” by The Smiths.
